Art Nouveau Earthenware Vase c.1880
A fabulous hand thrown vase from the late 19th century Art Nouveau period. Probably continental.
There are no makers marks but there were similar earthenware Nouveau pieces made in Belgium in this period so it could be from this area of the continent.
A lovely highly glossy brown and green glaze, the handles flow down either side in a very satisfying way.
The condition is good with just a small chip which has been filled at the base of one of the handles.
This feels very much an "Isadora Duncan" piece to me and absolutely exemplifies the creative spirit of the late nineteenth century.
It stands approximately 25cm tall, so is a very nice size, not too large for a domestic setting but bold and commands attention.
With its broad base and good weight its well grounded and stable and has a very earthy feel.
