SOLD Very Rare 'Obelisk & Vase' Pattern Worcester Cup
A very rare printed eighteenth century Worcester pattern known as "Obelisk & Vase"
This pattern can be found in Branyan, French and Sandon as I I.B.14 on page 343 where they show a jug with the pattern. The text reads
"The only known example of this pattern is the cream jug illustrated"
The book was last published in 1989 making it 36 years old.
I then found the same or a similar jug sold at Bonhams on 23 February 2005 and in the foot note it says.
"Zorensky catalogue, fig 668. Provenance: Godden Reference Collection, illustrated by Branyan, French and Sandon, p 343. Only three examples of this shape and pattern are recorded"
So we know of three pieces with this pattern, all jugs. This may still be the only cup with this pattern found and possibly only the fourth known piece.
Dated around 1780.
