In researching this pot I found a few that have been sold online and in auction,  some sold as St Cloud and others sold as 19th century Samson copies of a St Cloud pot.

There are a set of three in the British Museum which are described as "high fired earthenware"  and attributed to Samson Paris.

There is also one in the Metropolitan Museum New York and this is also described as earthenware.

This pot is certainly not earthenware and is a type of porcelain body with a low level of translucency.

However, after research and also advice from other collectors and dealers my conclusion is that this is not St Cloud and is most probably made by Samson Paris in the 19th century.

In the book   "Samson, Genius of Imitation" by Florence Slitine, she shows just such a pot and with a Samson mark.

This is probably what we would call a "toilet pot"  which would be used for make-up,  creams or pomade and sit on a dressing table.  Most likely made as part of a set of pots of different sizes as the collection of three at the British museum suggests.

This design and shape are a copy of a Saint-Cloud pot which in turn was decorated in imitation of Chinese porcelain.

For an example of a similar pot by St Cloud see "Porcelaines tendres françaises" by Gilbert-Jean Malgras, Paris, 1983, p. 102,  "a covered pot"
