London Delftware Lobed Dish in Polychrome Blue and Yellow Late 17thc
An early and wonderful example of late 17th century English Delft, probably London and possibly made in Lambeth.
Of a conical shape with a raised foot, sixteen flutes and a scalloped edge. Made of buff coloured clay body and covered with a blue-ish opaque tin glaze.
The decoration with underglaze pigments of dark blue, yellow, and a manganese purple/brown.
A little character, sitting or crouching on the ground in a landscape surrounded by abstract shapes in yellow and dark blue with radiating lines. Drawn in the dark brown pigment and filled with yellow and blue. The ground identified with a lighter blue brush mark.
The same motif repeated around the rim.
This pattern is considered to have been inspired by Ming style porcelain. The blue and yellow combination is unusual and considered a rare colour combination.
