London Delftware Lobed Dish in Polychrome Yellow & Brown Late 17thc
An early and wonderful example of late 17th century English Delft, probably London and possibly made in Lambeth.
Of a conical shape with a raised foot, twenty flutes. Made of a buff coloured clay body and covered with a creamy opaque tin-glaze.
The decoration with underglaze pigments of a warm iron bown and an egg yoke yellow.
The character which features in this design appears to be a woman dressed in turkish or asian clothing, sitting on the ground in a landscape surrounded by abstract shapes in yellow and brown with radiating lines.
The same motif repeated around the rim.
This pattern is considered to have been inspired by Ming style porcelain. The brown and yellow combination is unusual and very attractive combination.
