English Delft Plate c1750
A wonderful English delft plate decorated with a very enigmatic and unusual pattern.
A man with a pike walking across a bridge between buildings. Willow fronds handing from the top of the scene. Clouds and an enormous insect flying over head in the sky. Smoke comes from one chimney. The houses are of European style. Around the rim a loosely drawn pattern originating from 18th century Chinese Imari.
On the reverse there are three stilt marks commonly found on English delft of this period. The tin-glaze is a hard and slightly blueish glaze common on London and Liverpool delft of this period.
I love this pattern because rather than just a flower composition, a geometric pattern or a Chinese scene, this pattern seems to be telling a story.
I have not found many other examples and it seems this is quite a rare pattern.
Some chips around the edge consumate with deflt of this period, but not cracks. Presents very well.
